THE SHORT ANSWER
The Lone Peak 9 replaced the 8 on January 6, 2025 at $140, since raised to $145. It is the first update in years aimed at the complaints: more outsole rubber with deeper lugs and a flared heel, a recycled ripstop upper, and the toe bumper the 8 had shaved away. Reviewers who had watched the 5 through 8 wear out early said the 9 held up considerably better. Two months later Altra added the Lone Peak 9+, the same shoe with a Vibram Megagrip outsole, for $20 more.

Refined, same shoeThe correction, and the first Lone Peak in four years that addressed durability instead of restyling around it. Deeper lugs, more rubber, a flared heel and the toe bumper restored. Road Trail Run scored it 9 out of 10, RunRepeat 82, Outdoor Gear Lab 73, and iRunFar has kept it as its zero-drop pick through May 2026. It did not widen the fit back out, so if the 7 was the version that lost you, the 9 does not win you back. It does stop the shoe wearing out early.
Stick with the Lone Peak 8 if
- You want the shallower, softer-riding 8; the 9 is stiffer out of the box
- You are not paying current prices for an outsole upgrade you would only notice on wet rock
Move to the Lone Peak 9 if
- Your last few pairs wore out early; this is the version that fixed the outsole and put the toe bumper back
- You kept blowing out toes; the reinforced bumper is aimed at exactly that
- You want Vibram Megagrip on a Lone Peak, which means the 9+ rather than this one
What loyalists said about the update
Positive but thinly recorded, and worth re-checking. The public Reddit archives this was drawn from stop in May 2025, which leaves most of the 9's life unsampled. What is there reads as relief rather than complaint: owners several hundred miles in report the shoe going strong, and the loudest residual gripes are stiffness and the long-running confusion about which FootShape width is which. The Vibram-soled 9+ draws the strongest reaction of anything in the line, at 69 percent positive on the largest review volume, which reads as a direct answer to years of "give us a Lone Peak 6 with Megagrip".
