THE SHORT ANSWER

The Lone Peak 8 replaced the 7 in January 2024 and changed almost nothing. The engineered mesh became ripstop nylon, the laces got longer, two lace holes were added and some toe rubber came off. List price went down $10 to $140. Every independent tester said the same thing: one reviewer needed a close inspection to work out that Altra had sent the 8s rather than the 7s.

Faithful successor

The smallest update the modern Lone Peak has had. The Trek's reviewer needed a close inspection to tell the 8 apart from the 7, and someone who weighed both pairs found a single gram between them. Scores landed where you would expect for a carry-over: Doctors of Running B plus to A minus, Switchback Travel 4.3 out of 5, RunRepeat 75, Outdoor Gear Lab 72, and iRunFar's pick for best zero-drop shoe. If the 7 fit you, so does this, for $10 less.

Stick with the Lone Peak 7 if

  • You already own 7s that fit; there is close to nothing here you would feel
  • You want the slightly deeper 3.4 mm lugs, since the 8 measures shallower

Move to the Lone Peak 8 if

  • You are buying new anyway; the 8 is the same shoe $10 cheaper
  • You want the ripstop upper, which handles abrasion better than the mesh it replaced

Where the Altra Lone Peak is now

Two updates on, the Lone Peak 9 (2025) is what sits on shelves today. Against the shoe you own rather than the one that directly replaced it:

  • The Lone Peak 9 is 0.6 oz lighter
  • Drop is unchanged at 0 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price down $10

What loyalists said about the update

Runners do not treat the 8 as its own event. They write about the 7s and 8s together as one already-degraded stretch, in threads with titles like "Altra quality decline", and the complaints are the ones carried over from the 7: narrower than the 5 and 6, and uppers that ventilate themselves around the forefoot. There is a real counter-camp, including one runner who retired a pair of 6s for 8s and said it felt like hallelujah. The most telling reaction is from a reviewer who liked it enough to buy spare pairs in case the 9s came out worse.

Beyond the Lone Peak 8, these come closest to what the Lone Peak 7 did.

Hoka Speedgoat 7, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.6 oz
  • 5 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $165 list

The other shoe on every trail shortlist, and close to its opposite. The Speedgoat stacks 40 mm of foam on a 5 mm drop and locks your foot down; the Lone Peak sits at 25 mm, zero drop, and lets your toes spread. Cross-shopped constantly, but coming off one for the other is a real adjustment rather than a swap. The Speedgoat's Vibram Megagrip is the better outsole, which is why Altra now sells a Vibram version of its own.

Against your Altra Lone Peak 7: 1.4 oz lighter, 15 mm more heel stack, 5 mm more drop, $15 more at list.
