THE SHORT ANSWER
The Lone Peak 7 replaced the 6 in January 2023 at $150, the highest list price the line has ever carried. It brought the biggest outsole change in years, a reformulated MaxTrac with a new lug shape, and a stitchless upper that deleted the 6's drain holes. It also slimmed the midfoot and forefoot while Altra kept calling the fit Original FootShape, and that is the update Lone Peak loyalists still bring up.

Meanwhile it holds the lowest community score in the line at 65 percent positive. The outsole genuinely improved. The fit narrowed, and for a shoe bought specifically for its toebox, that is the only spec that counts.
Stick with the Lone Peak 6 if
- You bought the Lone Peak for the toebox; the 7 is measurably slimmer through the midfoot and forefoot
- You want the drain holes and the lighter upper, and you run in it rather than hiking months in it

What loyalists said about the update
The stockpiling started here. Owners measured the 7 against the 5 and 6 and said plainly that it is narrower despite the Original FootShape label, and the reaction was strong enough that other runners said the bad word of mouth scared them off upgrading at all. The Trek's reviewer summed up the mood: every spring a new revision arrives and it feels like rolling the dice on whether you will still like them. Worth noting against the trend, a PCT hiker whose two pairs of 6s blew out at the sides finished on 7s whose uppers held. And by 2025 the 7 had become the version people missed, with a thread titled "RIP Lone Peak 7".
