The complete Altra Lone Peak lineage

The Lone Peak is Altra's flagship trail shoe and the clearest statement of what the brand is for: zero drop, 25 mm of foam front and back, and a toebox shaped like a foot. It has been the most-worn shoe on the Appalachian Trail every year since 2017, and 19.4 percent of thru-hikers surveyed in 2025 were wearing one. That is the cohort every update lands in front of, and they replace shoes four or five times a hike, so they notice everything. Two updates broke trust. The 5 (2021) swapped the old A-Bound midsole for Altra EGO and set off years of durability complaints. The 7 (2023) narrowed the fit while the marketing still said Original FootShape, which sent loyalists to eBay with saved searches for old 6s. The 9 (2025) is the walk-back: more outsole rubber, a restored toe bumper, a tougher recycled ripstop upper. Numbered Lone Peaks are only part of the family. The ALL-WTHR Low and Mid, the Hiker, the waterproof and Gore-Tex versions, and the Lone Peak 9+ (the same shoe with a Vibram Megagrip outsole for $160, two months after the 9) share the name and the platform without joining the succession. The 4.5, which closed out the A-Bound era in late 2019, sits just before the window this site covers. Altra's other trail shoes, the Superior, Timp, Olympus and Outroad, are separate lines.
