THE SHORT ANSWER
The Lone Peak 6 replaced the 5 in January 2022 at $140. Altra cut close to an ounce a shoe by replacing the stitched overlays with a bonded film, tightened a midfoot the 5 had left sloppy, and cut laser drain holes into the upper. It also fits about half a size shorter. Trail runners called it the best Lone Peak in years. Thru-hikers found the drain holes tore open, and the 6 is the version they still blame for shredded uppers.

RunRepeat scored it 90 out of 100, Road Trail Run 9.4, and RunRepeat's caliper work put its toebox at 103.4 mm, tied for the widest trail shoe it had measured. The ride did not change; the shoe just got lighter, held the midfoot properly and stopped fitting long. The catch is that the same drain holes that made it lighter are why a chunk of the thru-hiking crowd remembers the 6 as the one that fell apart.
Stick with the Lone Peak 5 if
- You need the upper to last months rather than miles; the 5 has no drain holes to tear open
- You sized down in the 5 and do not want to rebuy half a size up
Move to the Lone Peak 6 if
- You want the lighter shoe with the midfoot actually held down
- The 5 felt long and sloppy on your foot
- You want the widest-measuring toebox the line has had

Split cleanly by how far people run in it. Trail runners call it the best number in the line and hunt it on eBay and Facebook Marketplace with saved-search alerts years after it went out of production. Thru-hikers tell the opposite story, in which the drain holes blow out and the uppers shred inside a few hundred miles. Both camps are describing the same shoe honestly; the 6 rewarded runs and did not survive months of consecutive days.
