THE SHORT ANSWER
The Saucony Peregrine 12 replaced the Peregrine 11 in February 2022 and stripped the shoe down. About an ounce per shoe came out of the tongue, the heel collar and the overlays, the woven full-length rock plate became a dedicated forefoot plate, and a thick PWRRUN+ topsole arrived under the foot. Reviewers called it lighter, grippier and faster. Long-time owners called it flimsy.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?
Changed characterThe strip-down, and the cleanest reviewer-versus-veteran split in the line. Road Trail Run titled its review Same Great Taste, Less Filling; Doctors of Running graded it A-range; RunRepeat scored it 81. The people who had bought five Peregrines before this one wrote the angriest reviews in the line's history, about padding deleted, lateral support gone and uppers that opened at 100 miles. Reddit sentiment dropped from 60 to 50 percent and stayed down for two generations.
Stick with the Peregrine 11 if
- You valued the padded tongue and collar; that comfort is exactly what the 12 deleted
- Your feet push upper sidewalls, since the 12 is the generation that started blowing out there
Move to the Peregrine 12 if
- You want a full ounce off with grip and protection intact
- The PWRRUN+ topsole appeals: it is the plushest thing any Peregrine had carried to that point
Where the Saucony Peregrine is now
Four generations separate the Saucony Peregrine 11 from the Peregrine 16 (2026), so the gap is wider than any single update suggests:
- The Peregrine 16 is 1.1 oz lighter
- 5 mm more heel stack
- Drop is unchanged at 4 mm
- New midsole foam
- List price up $25
What loyalists said about the update
Split exactly along tenure lines. New buyers got a lighter, grippier shoe and mostly liked it; veterans wrote things like the 12 was my 7th pair of Peregrines, they are stiff and throw my balance off, and little lateral support, minimal toe protection, flat out flimsy. The durability record backs the veterans: repaired uppers at 500 km, blowouts at 100 miles, and one runner who quit the brand after their 12s failed at 300 km. Zappos carries the line's biggest sample here, 197 reviews with 19 percent at one or two stars.

Beyond the Peregrine 12, these come closest to what the Peregrine 11 did.

- 9.6 oz
- 5 mm drop
- 40 mm heel
- $165 list
The two mainstream technical-trail picks, split by philosophy. The Speedgoat stacks 40 mm of foam on a 5 mm drop and protects with sheer volume; the Peregrine sits around 30 mm on a 4 mm drop and protects with a rock plate, trading cushion for ground feel and about an ounce. Since the Peregrine 16 they share Vibram Megagrip rubber, so the choice is now purely about how much shoe you want between you and the trail.
Against your Saucony Peregrine 11: 1.3 oz lighter, 13 mm more heel stack, 1 mm more drop, $45 more at list.

- 10.8 oz
- 6 mm drop
- 38 mm heel
- $160 list
The other conventional-drop trail workhorse with a rock-plate heritage, one shelf over. The Cascadia is the heavier, more protective, more hiking-adjacent of the two, with a 2E width the Peregrine only recently matched; the Peregrine is lighter, lower and quicker. Believe in the Run benchmarked the Peregrine 16 against the Cascadia 19 directly, and both lines swapped their house rubber for Vibram within a year of each other.
Against your Saucony Peregrine 11: the same weight, 11 mm more heel stack, 2 mm more drop, $40 more at list.

- 10.4 oz
- 0 mm drop
- 25 mm heel
- $140 list
The two low-stack, ground-feel trail shoes, separated by the drop question. The Lone Peak is zero drop and foot-shaped at 25 mm; the Peregrine runs 4 mm with a conventional taper and a snugger midfoot, plus a rock plate the Lone Peak buries in its midsole. Runners who want trail feel without committing to zero drop usually land on the Peregrine; the traffic the other way is Peregrine owners whose toes want more room.
Against your Saucony Peregrine 11: 0.5 oz lighter, 2 mm less heel stack, 4 mm less drop, $20 more at list.
Questions runners ask
- Is the Saucony Peregrine 11 still available?
- For now. Amazon still lists the Saucony Peregrine 11, but the size run is thinning and prices swing with remaining stock. If your size is there, this is the late window, not the early one.
- Is the Peregrine 12 a downgrade from the Saucony Peregrine 11?
- Not a downgrade, but a different shoe. The Peregrine 12 scores well with new buyers while changing the ride that Saucony Peregrine 11 loyalists bought it for. Read the spec changes before assuming it will feel familiar.
- How much lighter is the Peregrine 12?
- 1.1 oz lighter in a men's US 9: 9.8 oz against the Saucony Peregrine 11's 10.9 oz.
- Is the Saucony Peregrine still made?
- Yes. The current version is the Saucony Peregrine 16, released in 2026, 5 versions on from the Saucony Peregrine 11.
- What is the closest current alternative to the Saucony Peregrine 11?
- The Hoka Speedgoat 7.
