THE SHORT ANSWER
The Altra Timp 4 replaced the Timp 3 in April 2022 and rebuilt the shoe rather than patching it. Quantic foam gave way to Altra EGO MAX, which is much softer, the upper became a one-piece woven mesh with TPU overlays and a properly padded heel collar, and the outsole lugs were recut. It gained more than an ounce and $20. It is also the Timp owners still hunt for.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?
Changed characterThe best-received Timp there has been, and the version the rest of the line gets measured against. Trading Quantic for EGO MAX turned a firm, competent trail shoe into a soft one, and Believe in the Run titled the review Altra at its Finest. It also gained more than an ounce and $20, and the outsole stayed the weak part. Four years on, owners describe buying every pair they could find before it sold out, which says more than any score.
Stick with the Timp 3 if
- You want the firmer Quantic ride; EGO MAX is a much softer foam and the 4 stays soft
- You run in the cold, since RunRepeat measured this foam stiffening far more than average in a freezer test
Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.
Move to the Timp 4 if
- The 3 felt harsh over distance; this is the softest the Timp had been
- You want the padded heel collar and the sturdier one-piece upper
Where the Altra Timp is now
The line has moved three versions past the Altra Timp 3, and the current model is now the Timp 6 (2025). Measured against your shoe:
- The Timp 6 is 0.6 oz heavier
- 1 mm more heel stack
- Drop is unchanged at 0 mm
- New midsole foam
- List price up $25
What loyalists said about the update
The high-water mark: 81 percent positive across 62 Reddit reviews, the best of any Timp with an aggregate page, against 60 percent for the 2 and 67 percent for both the 5 and the 6. The behaviour behind the number is the part that matters. One owner bought two spare pairs before it ran out online, another says they bought up every pair they could find, and a third put about 450 miles on theirs before the tread started slipping and still called it the best shoe they ever had. The complaints are weight and outsole life. Almost none of them are about fit.

Beyond the Timp 4, these come closest to what the Timp 3 did.

- 10.4 oz
- 0 mm drop
- 25 mm heel
- $140 list
The same shoe with 5 mm less foam, and the comparison every Altra buyer actually makes. Both are zero drop with a FootShape toebox; the Lone Peak sits at 25 mm and keeps the StoneGuard rock plate, the Timp sits at 29 or 30 mm and does not. The Timp has run a Vibram Megagrip outsole since 2024, which on the Lone Peak is still the 9+ upcharge. Coming off a Lone Peak you notice the extra foam first and the lost ground feel second.
Against your Altra Timp 3: 0.8 oz heavier, 4 mm less heel stack, the same drop.

- 9.6 oz
- 5 mm drop
- 40 mm heel
- $165 list
Cross-shopped constantly and built on opposite premises. The Speedgoat stacks 40 mm on a 5 mm drop and holds the foot still; the Timp sits at 30 mm, zero drop, and lets the toes spread. Both run Vibram Megagrip, so grip is not what decides it. Drop and toebox are, and neither converts quickly to the other.
Against your Altra Timp 3: the same weight, 11 mm more heel stack, 5 mm more drop, $25 more at list.

- 9.2 oz
- 0 mm drop
- 28 mm heel
- $160 list
The same platform without the lugs, and Altra's best-selling road shoe. Zero drop, Standard FootShape, 28 mm of foam on the current version against the Timp's 30. Timp owners who run road sections to reach the trail lost that option at the Timp 6, when the recut Vibram tread made it trail-only; the Torin is where Altra expects those miles to go now.
Against your Altra Timp 3: 0.4 oz lighter, 1 mm less heel stack, the same drop, $20 more at list.
