THE SHORT ANSWER

The Altra Timp 3 replaced the Timp 2 in April 2021 and changed almost nothing but the upper. Same Quantic midsole, same MaxTrac outsole, same 29 mm of stack. What Altra fixed was the fit. The 2 had come in narrower through the midfoot with less volume in the toebox, and the 3 opened it back up with hot-melt panels on the sides of the vamp and a reshaped heel cup.

Refined, same shoe

A fit fix wearing a whole number. Altra reused the Quantic midsole and the MaxTrac outsole and spent the update entirely on the upper, which opened the toebox back up after the 2 came in narrow. Believe in the Run's testers split on whether that was progress: one preferred the 2's simpler upper and slightly squishier feel and found the tongue slid sideways mid-run, the other found lockdown better on narrow feet. Running Warehouse still called it the best zero-drop trail shoe of 2021.

Stick with the Timp 2 if

  • You liked the 2's simpler, softer-feeling upper; the 3 is stiffer and takes longer to break in
  • Your 2s fit you fine, since the midsole, outsole and stack are all carried over

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Timp 3 if

  • The 2 pinched your toes; the 3 is the version that opened the toebox back up
  • You want the reshaped heel cup and the lace garage

Where the Altra Timp is now

Four generations separate the Altra Timp 2 from the Timp 6 (2025), so the gap is wider than any single update suggests:

  • The Timp 6 is 0.4 oz heavier
  • 1 mm more heel stack
  • Drop is unchanged at 0 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $35

What loyalists said about the update

Thin, and the only Timp in this window with no Reddit aggregate at all, so there is no score to put next to the 2's 60 percent or the 4's 81 percent. What exists is review comments: one owner reported the glued reinforcements delaminating on multiple pairs and went back to the Lone Peak, several reported the tongue sliding, and the general read was that the shoe was good and the update was small.

Beyond the Timp 3, these come closest to what the Timp 2 did.

Altra Lone Peak 9, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.4 oz
  • 0 mm drop
  • 25 mm heel
  • $140 list

The same shoe with 5 mm less foam, and the comparison every Altra buyer actually makes. Both are zero drop with a FootShape toebox; the Lone Peak sits at 25 mm and keeps the StoneGuard rock plate, the Timp sits at 29 or 30 mm and does not. The Timp has run a Vibram Megagrip outsole since 2024, which on the Lone Peak is still the 9+ upcharge. Coming off a Lone Peak you notice the extra foam first and the lost ground feel second.

Against your Altra Timp 2: 0.6 oz heavier, 4 mm less heel stack, the same drop, $10 more at list.

Hoka Speedgoat 7, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.6 oz
  • 5 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $165 list

Cross-shopped constantly and built on opposite premises. The Speedgoat stacks 40 mm on a 5 mm drop and holds the foot still; the Timp sits at 30 mm, zero drop, and lets the toes spread. Both run Vibram Megagrip, so grip is not what decides it. Drop and toebox are, and neither converts quickly to the other.

Against your Altra Timp 2: 0.2 oz lighter, 11 mm more heel stack, 5 mm more drop, $35 more at list.

Altra Torin 9, mens shoe, side profile
  • 9.2 oz
  • 0 mm drop
  • 28 mm heel
  • $160 list

The same platform without the lugs, and Altra's best-selling road shoe. Zero drop, Standard FootShape, 28 mm of foam on the current version against the Timp's 30. Timp owners who run road sections to reach the trail lost that option at the Timp 6, when the recut Vibram tread made it trail-only; the Torin is where Altra expects those miles to go now.

Against your Altra Timp 2: 0.6 oz lighter, 1 mm less heel stack, the same drop, $30 more at list.
