THE SHORT ANSWER
The Altra Timp 6 replaced the Timp 5 in December 2025, and it is the fit fix. Fewer overlays through the midfoot, a softer rolled mesh upper, and a toebox RunRepeat measured 2.3 mm wider than the 5's. Stack went up a millimetre to 30 mm, the Vibram Megagrip outsole was recut for forefoot grip, and the price went to $165. One review is titled What the Timp 5 Should Have Been.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?
Refined, same shoeThe fix the 5 needed, and it has not won the base back. The toebox measurably widened, the upper softened, the outsole got stickier, and the reviewers moved with it: RunRepeat went 82 to 84, and Barefoot Run Review titled its review What the Timp 5 Should Have Been. Reddit did not move at all, sitting at the same 67 percent as the 5 and 14 points under the 4. Believe in the Run's own panel split, with one tester reporting ankle irritation from the low-cut lateral heel counter and another calling the materials cheap at $165.
Stick with the Timp 5 if
- Your 5s fit you; the midsole and outsole are close to carried over and the 6 lists $10 higher
- You run road to reach the trail, since reviewers say the recut outsole made the 6 trail-only
Move to the Timp 6 if
- The 5 pinched your midfoot or your toes; this is the version that measurably widened it back out
- You want the stickier tread and do not mind about 0.7 oz more shoe
What loyalists said about the update
Reviewers say fixed; the people who left have not come back. The 6 aggregates 67 percent positive across 85 Reddit reviews, identical to the 5 and well under the 4's 81 percent. The clearest voice against the redemption reading is a runner retiring a pair of Timp 4s, who had bought two spares before they sold out: Timp 5 and 6 sadly very disappointing, why change a good thing. The positive reports are real and ordinary, along the lines of bought the Timp 6 recently and they feel great. Still live: the upper being snug and not breathable, and RunRepeat scoring the heel padding durability 1 out of 5, its lowest possible mark.

Beyond the Timp 6, these come closest to what the Timp 5 did.

- 10.4 oz
- 0 mm drop
- 25 mm heel
- $140 list
The same shoe with 5 mm less foam, and the comparison every Altra buyer actually makes. Both are zero drop with a FootShape toebox; the Lone Peak sits at 25 mm and keeps the StoneGuard rock plate, the Timp sits at 29 or 30 mm and does not. The Timp has run a Vibram Megagrip outsole since 2024, which on the Lone Peak is still the 9+ upcharge. Coming off a Lone Peak you notice the extra foam first and the lost ground feel second.
Against your Altra Timp 5: 0.9 oz heavier, 4 mm less heel stack, the same drop, $15 less at list.

- 9.6 oz
- 5 mm drop
- 40 mm heel
- $165 list
Cross-shopped constantly and built on opposite premises. The Speedgoat stacks 40 mm on a 5 mm drop and holds the foot still; the Timp sits at 30 mm, zero drop, and lets the toes spread. Both run Vibram Megagrip, so grip is not what decides it. Drop and toebox are, and neither converts quickly to the other.
Against your Altra Timp 5: the same weight, 11 mm more heel stack, 5 mm more drop, $10 more at list.

- 9.2 oz
- 0 mm drop
- 28 mm heel
- $160 list
The same platform without the lugs, and Altra's best-selling road shoe. Zero drop, Standard FootShape, 28 mm of foam on the current version against the Timp's 30. Timp owners who run road sections to reach the trail lost that option at the Timp 6, when the recut Vibram tread made it trail-only; the Torin is where Altra expects those miles to go now.
Against your Altra Timp 5: 0.3 oz lighter, 1 mm less heel stack, the same drop, $5 more at list.
