THE SHORT ANSWER

The Cloudmonster 3 replaced it on March 5, 2026 at $190. Most of the update is the upper: re-engineered mesh and a padded tongue aimed at the lace bite the 2 was known for, plus a 2E width, the first in the line. Underneath, On added a third layer of CloudTec pods while the published stack stayed at 35 and 29 mm, so the ride is reshaped rather than raised. It is still a firm 10.4 oz shoe, and it costs $10 more.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?

Refined, same shoe

A fit fix rather than a ride fix. The upper is genuinely better and the 2E is new, but the shoe underneath is the same firm 10.4 oz trainer, now at $190. Believe in the Run headlined its review Improved, But Barely and graded the value a C. Doctors of Running gave it a B plus and was clearer about what it is now, an easy-day and walking shoe. RunRepeat marked it down from 85 to 82. If the 2 was not for you, the 3 does not change the answer.

Stick with the Cloudmonster 2 if

  • You already own 2s that fit, since the ride underneath is close to unchanged
  • You are not paying $190 for an upper, which is most of what the 3 is

Move to the Cloudmonster 3 if

  • The 2 gave you lace bite; the padded tongue is the specific fix
  • You need a 2E, which this line has never offered before
  • You are buying new and want a full size run rather than clearance stock

What loyalists said about the update

Quieter than the 2, and not in the shoe's favor. Reddit sits at 50 percent positive across 39 reviews, down from the 2's 58 percent, and the tone reads closer to indifference than to argument. The enthusiasm went to the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper instead, the plateless Helion HF version, which heavier runners keep recommending to each other. The two recurring gripes on the 3 itself are the price and the sizing, which is the question On has not settled across three versions.

Beyond the Cloudmonster 3, these come closest to what the Cloudmonster 2 did.

New Balance 1080 v15, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9 oz
  • 6 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $170 list

The closest match on paper in this group, and the only one that shares the Cloudmonster's 6 mm drop. The 1080 v15 is about 1.4 oz lighter on 5 mm more heel stack, and its Infinion foam is the bouncier of the two. It also sells in a full width range where the Cloudmonster has one 2E and nothing else.

Against your On Cloudmonster 2: 1.4 oz lighter, 5 mm more heel stack, the same drop, $10 less at list.

Brooks Glycerin 23, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.6 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 38 mm heel
  • $175 list

Both are firm, composed shoes wearing max-cushion silhouettes, which makes them closer in feel than in spec. The Glycerin 23 carries 3 mm more heel stack on an 8 mm drop against the Cloudmonster 6, weighs about the same, and lists $15 less. Brooks also sells it in widths.

Against your On Cloudmonster 2: 0.2 oz heavier, 3 mm more heel stack, 2 mm more drop, $5 less at list.

Hoka Bondi 9, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.5 oz
  • 5 mm drop
  • 43 mm heel
  • $170 list

The max-cushion shoe the Cloudmonster gets shopped against, though the spec sheet explains why the two feel less alike than the silhouettes suggest: 43 mm of heel stack against the Cloudmonster 35, at almost the same 10.5 oz. The Bondi is the softer, more insulated ride; the Cloudmonster is firmer and rolls harder off the front.

Against your On Cloudmonster 2: the same weight, 8 mm more heel stack, 1 mm less drop, $10 less at list.

Questions runners ask

Is the On Cloudmonster 2 still available?
For now. Amazon still lists the On Cloudmonster 2, but the size run is thinning and prices swing with remaining stock. If your size is there, this is the late window, not the early one.
Is the Cloudmonster 3 a downgrade from the On Cloudmonster 2?
No. Most runners rate the Cloudmonster 3 as the same shoe done slightly better. The changes are real but none of them alter what the shoe is.
