THE SHORT ANSWER

The Invincible 3 replaced the Invincible 2 on February 2, 2023 at the same $180 list price. Nike added a stability layer over the strobel, widened the heel and switched to a thinner, denser Flyknit, which firmed the midfoot and cut the collar padding. It is the update that split this line's audience, and it turned out to be the last Invincible Nike made.

Changed character

The 3 made the Invincible more stable and less fun, and it is the version people argue about. Adding a stability layer under the foot firmed the midfoot noticeably, which helped heel strikers and cost the shoe the uncomplicated trampoline bounce that justified $180. The upper is the bigger problem: a wider heel with less padding and shorter lacing meant testers could not lock the foot down, and heel slip is the complaint that follows this shoe everywhere. Wide and extra-wide arrived for the first time. So did the end of the line.

Stick with the Invincible 2 if

  • The 2 bounce is why you bought this shoe; the stability layer in the 3 firms exactly that
  • Your heel stayed put in the 2, because the 3 is the version people cannot lock down

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Invincible 3 if

  • You heel strike and found the 2 unstable at the back
  • You need a wide or extra-wide, which the 3 is the only Invincible to offer

What loyalists said about the update

The most divided reception in a short line. Reviewers who heel strike generally rated the 3 an improvement on stability, and the arrival of wide and extra-wide widths won over people the first two versions had excluded. Against that, the firmer midfoot and the heel fit dominated the discussion: Doctors of Running preferred the 2 outright, and Believe in the Run built its whole review around the heel. Owners of the 2 who tried the 3 in store frequently reported buying nothing at all, which is roughly where the line was when Nike ended it.

Beyond the Invincible 3, these come closest to what the Invincible 2 did.

Nike Vomero 18, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.5 oz
  • 10 mm drop
  • 46 mm heel
  • $150 list

The Vomero is where Nike put this shoe. The Vomero Plus tier is the direct heir, all ZoomX at $180, while the numbered Vomero 18 runs ZoomX over a firmer ReactX base for $150. Either is taller than the Invincible 3 was; neither is as uniformly soft.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit 2: 0.2 oz heavier, 7 mm more heel stack, 1 mm more drop, $30 less at list.

New Balance 1080 v15, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9 oz
  • 6 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $170 list

The closest thing to the old Invincible ride from another brand: soft, bouncy, and built for easy miles. The 1080 v15 is about an ounce and a half lighter than the Invincible 3 was and lists $170, and its FuelCell foam is the nearest match to ZoomX bounce on the market.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit 2: 1.3 oz lighter, 1 mm more heel stack, 3 mm less drop, $10 less at list.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 28, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.9 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 43.5 mm heel
  • $165 list

The plush flagship most Invincible owners cross-shopped. The Nimbus is firmer and more planted than the Invincible was, and it holds the heel far better, which was the 3 fit complaint. It also lasts longer; ZoomX outsoles wore fast.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit 2: 0.4 oz lighter, 4.5 mm more heel stack, 1 mm less drop, $15 less at list.
