THE SHORT ANSWER

The Invincible 2 replaced the original ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit in spring 2022 at the same $180 list price. Underneath it is the same shoe: the same full-length ZoomX midsole on the same 39/30 mm platform, with new laces and a reworked Flyknit upper. Reviewers who ran both said the ride was unchanged.

Faithful successor

The 2 is the same shoe with better laces. Nike touched the upper and nothing else, so the 39/30 mm platform, the full-length ZoomX and the bounce all carried over intact. Doctors of Running graded it A- and called it a bouncy, responsive easy-day trainer that suits midfoot and forefoot strikers, with the same caveat the original carried: the heel bevel and the wide rear flare can fight heel strikers. If you liked the first one, this is a restock rather than a decision.

Stick with the Invincible 1 if

  • You already own the original and it fits; the 2 changes nothing you run on
  • You find the first version cheaper, because the platform underfoot is identical

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Invincible 2 if

  • Lockdown was your problem with the original; the new laces and knit are the fix
  • You are buying into the line now and want the version with the fewest known upper complaints

What loyalists said about the update

Untroubled. The consensus across reviews was that the 2 was almost exactly the same shoe as the original, with new shoelaces and a tweaked upper, and that the ride was identical. The complaints carried over rather than changing: a narrow fit, a warm upper, and ZoomX outsole durability that reviewers kept flagging after visible gashes in test pairs. Nobody framed this update as a loss, which is why the grief in this line all lands one version later.

Ready to move on?

Beyond the Invincible 2, these come closest to what the Invincible 1 did.

Nike Vomero 18, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.5 oz
  • 10 mm drop
  • 46 mm heel
  • $150 list

The Vomero is where Nike put this shoe. The Vomero Plus tier is the direct heir, all ZoomX at $180, while the numbered Vomero 18 runs ZoomX over a firmer ReactX base for $150. Either is taller than the Invincible 3 was; neither is as uniformly soft.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit: 0.7 oz heavier, 7 mm more heel stack, 1 mm more drop, $30 less at list.

New Balance 1080 v15, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9 oz
  • 6 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $170 list

The closest thing to the old Invincible ride from another brand: soft, bouncy, and built for easy miles. The 1080 v15 is about an ounce and a half lighter than the Invincible 3 was and lists $170, and its FuelCell foam is the nearest match to ZoomX bounce on the market.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit: 0.8 oz lighter, 1 mm more heel stack, 3 mm less drop, $10 less at list.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 28, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.9 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 43.5 mm heel
  • $165 list

The plush flagship most Invincible owners cross-shopped. The Nimbus is firmer and more planted than the Invincible was, and it holds the heel far better, which was the 3 fit complaint. It also lasts longer; ZoomX outsoles wore fast.

Against your Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit: the same weight, 4.5 mm more heel stack, 1 mm less drop, $15 less at list.
