THE SHORT ANSWER
The Rincon 3 replaced the 2 in August 2021 at the same $115 price. Hoka introduced a more resilient EVA tune, stripped weight from the upper, and added rubber in more high-wear zones while cutting 0.3 oz. It directly addressed the Rincon's early foam and outsole wear without changing its 29/24 mm, 5 mm geometry.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?
Refined, same shoeThe 3 is the mature version of the original Rincon. It remains exceptionally light and versatile, while the revised foam and added rubber make a credible attempt at the durability problem. They do not eliminate it. This is the version to seek if the classic 5 mm Rincon formula is what you want.
Stick with the Rincon 2 if
- Your Rincon 2 is still lively; geometry and role are unchanged
- The Rincon 3's thinner asymmetrical tongue does not suit your instep
Move to the Rincon 3 if
- You want more rubber and the best durability attempt of the original platform
- You want the lightest published weight in the classic Rincon line
Where the Hoka Rincon is now
The line has moved three versions past the Hoka Rincon 2, and the current model is now the Rincon 5 (2026). Measured against your shoe:
- The Rincon 5 is 2 oz heavier
- 9 mm more heel stack
- Drop moved from 5 mm to 8 mm
- New midsole foam
- List price up $10
What loyalists said about the update
Positive on ride and divided on lifespan. Reviewers saw a smoother, more resilient update and kept recommending it as a one-shoe trainer. Owners ranged from dead foam near 200 km to pairs lasting well beyond 600 km, with outsole grip and tongue movement recurring as complaints.
