THE SHORT ANSWER

The Adizero Boston 10 replaced the Boston 9 in June 2021 as a full reboot: Boost was dropped for a far taller Lightstrike Pro and Lightstrike stack with EnergyRods in between, about 2 oz heavier and $20 more. Loyalists called it a Boston in name only and bought up remaining 9s instead.

A different shoe

A total revamp, Believe in the Run's words, and this line's cleanest case of a new shoe wearing an old name. Adidas rebuilt the Boston as a maximal rod-plated trainer, and reviewers split only on whether keeping the name was fair: FueledByLOLZ wrote that Adidas should have renamed it, while Solereview argued retaining the name made sense. Nobody argued it ran like a Boston 9.

Stick with the Adizero Boston 9 if

  • You bought Bostons for the low, firm, race-flat feel; the 10 is a tall maximal trainer
  • Boost's 500-plus-mile durability was the point for you
  • The 8.4 oz weight mattered on race day; the 10 weighs over 10 oz

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Adizero Boston 10 if

  • You want a modern plated trainer for tempo days and long runs
  • The 9 always ran too thin under your forefoot past the half marathon
  • You are a bigger runner and the 9 bottomed out under you

Where the Adidas Adizero Boston is now

Four generations separate the Adidas Adizero Boston 9 from the Adizero Boston 13 (2025), so the gap is wider than any single update suggests:

  • The Adizero Boston 13 is 0.6 oz heavier
  • 14.5 mm more heel stack
  • Drop moved from 9.5 mm to 6 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $40

The 9 to 10 is the cleanest case on this site of a new shoe keeping an old name. Adidas dropped full-length Boost for a much taller Lightstrike Pro stack with rods through the middle, added about 2 oz and $20 to the list price, and turned a low, firm, fast trainer into a maximal plated one. Reviewers argued about whether the name should have moved with it. Nobody argued the two shoes ran alike. If you are here from a 9, treat the 10 as an unrelated purchase and shop it against other plated trainers rather than buying on the name.

What loyalists said about the update

The grief event this line is known for. LetsRun called the 10 a Boston in name only, mourned the glory days of invincible TPU, and openly planned to stockpile clearance 9s, which sold for around $55 for a year after the reboot. The counter-camp liked the new shoe fine; they just agreed it was not a Boston.
