THE SHORT ANSWER

The Guide 17 replaced the Guide 16 in February 2024 at the same $140, but it was not a routine update. Saucony removed Hollow-Tech, widened and rockered the platform around CenterPath geometry, raised the forefoot 2 mm, and cut the drop from 8 mm to 6 mm, changing the Guide from a posted stability shoe into a mild guidance shoe.

  • New midsole foam

Every spec side by side, with the reason behind each change: Guide 16 vs 17.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?

A different shoe

A successful modern trainer and a genuine identity break. CenterPath made the Guide smoother, roomier, and less intrusive, but it no longer delivered the firm medial resistance that defined the 16 and its predecessors. Treat the 17 as a mild, geometry-stable daily trainer, not a drop-in replacement for every posted-Guide wearer.

Stick with the Guide 16 if

  • You rely on the 16's discrete medial resistance
  • You want an 8 mm drop and a flatter transition
  • A wide, strongly rockered platform feels cumbersome

Move to the Guide 17 if

  • Traditional stability hardware feels intrusive
  • You want a smoother rocker and broader landing base
  • You prefer a lower 6 mm drop with more forefoot cushion

Where the Saucony Guide is now

The line has moved three versions past the Saucony Guide 16, and the current model is now the Guide 19 (2026). Measured against your shoe:

  • The Guide 19 is 0.2 oz heavier
  • Drop moved from 8 mm to 6 mm
  • New midsole foam

What loyalists said about the update

Reviewers broadly welcomed the smooth rocker and unobtrusive support. Owner reaction split by need: runners seeking mild guidance often preferred it, while long-time users who depended on Hollow-Tech described the loss as substantial and stocked up on Guide 15 and 16 pairs.

Questions runners ask

Is the Saucony Guide 16 still available?
For now. Amazon still lists the Saucony Guide 16, but the size run is thinning and prices swing with remaining stock. If your size is there, this is the late window, not the early one.
Is the Guide 17 a downgrade from the Saucony Guide 16?
Treat the Guide 17 as a new model that borrowed the name. Very little of the Saucony Guide 16's ride carries over, so shop it against alternatives rather than buying on loyalty.
Did the drop change from the Saucony Guide 16 to the Guide 17?
Yes, from 8 mm to 6 mm. A drop change this size affects where your foot loads at landing, so plan a few easy runs to adapt.
Is the Saucony Guide still made?
Yes. The current version is the Saucony Guide 19, released in 2026, 3 versions on from the Saucony Guide 16.
What is the closest current alternative to the Saucony Guide 16?
The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25. The Adrenaline is the traditional head-to-head. Its 10 mm drop and GuideRails provide more obvious control; the Guide 19 is softer, more rockered, and milder underfoot at 6 mm.
