THE SHORT ANSWER

The Clifton 8 replaced the Clifton 7 in June 2021. It moved to a foam compound 15 percent lighter, switched to fully vegan materials, and left the shape, stack, and $130 price alone.

Every spec side by side, with the reason behind each change: Clifton 7 vs 8.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?

Faithful successor

The 8 is the Clifton recipe untouched: same stack, same 5 mm drop, same price, lighter foam. One reviewer named it his trainer pick for 2021 and called the fandom behind it justified. If you liked the 7, the 8 asked nothing of you.

Stick with the Clifton 7 if

  • Leftover 7s are on closeout; the geometry and fit are the same
  • The 7 already fits you and lighter foam is not worth full price

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Clifton 8 if

  • You want the same shoe with lighter, slightly softer foam
  • Vegan materials matter to you; the 8 was the first fully vegan Clifton

Where the Hoka Clifton is now

Four generations separate the Hoka Clifton 7 from the Clifton 11 (2026), so the gap is wider than any single update suggests:

  • The Clifton 11 is 0.5 oz heavier
  • 13 mm more heel stack
  • Drop moved from 5 mm to 8 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $25

What loyalists said about the update

Uniformly warm. Believe in the Run ran it past three testers and all rated it highly. The complaints were the usual Clifton ones: it does not want to go fast, the upper runs warm, and narrow feet needed a break-in period.
