THE SHORT ANSWER

The Bondi 8 replaced the Bondi 7 in July 2022 with the first full redesign in years: softer, lighter foam on a taller, wider platform with an extended flared heel, and a list price up $15 to $165. Not everyone moved on. Hoka brought the Bondi 7 back as a retro in 2024, and it still sells as a lifestyle shoe.

Changed character

The 8 was the Bondi's first real redesign: more foam, a wider base, an extended flared heel, and a ride one reviewer called the most cushioned daily trainer ever made. It also became more shoe in every direction, and part of the Bondi 7 crowd never accepted the bigger fit. Hoka reissuing the 7 two years later tells you that group was not small.

Stick with the Bondi 7 if

  • You wore the 7 for its lower, more contained fit; the 8 fits bigger everywhere
  • The retro Bondi 7 covers your casual and all-day-standing use for less money

Move to the Bondi 8 if

  • You want more cushion than the 7 ever had, on a wider and more stable base
  • The 7 felt harsh or dated underfoot; the 8 is softer and smoother rolling

Where the Hoka Bondi is now

Two updates on, the Bondi 9 (2025) is what sits on shelves today. Against the shoe you own rather than the one that directly replaced it:

  • The Bondi 9 is 0.2 oz lighter
  • 10 mm more heel stack
  • Drop moved from 4 mm to 5 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $20

What loyalists said about the update

Split. Aggregated Reddit reviews land around 61 percent positive. Reviewers praised the balanced, stable cushioning; the complaints cluster on the tight midfoot, the tapered toebox, and sheer bulk, with longtime wearers calling it a different fit from the 7 they had bought on repeat.

Beyond the Bondi 8, these come closest to what the Bondi 7 did.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 28, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.9 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 43.5 mm heel
  • $165 list

The modern Nimbus runs the same tall, soft, rockered recipe with a plusher, warmer upper and a little less bulk. The most direct cross-shop in the max-cushion aisle.

Against your Hoka Bondi 7: 0.8 oz lighter, 10.5 mm more heel stack, 4 mm more drop, $15 more at list.

New Balance 1080 v15, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9 oz
  • 6 mm drop
  • 40 mm heel
  • $170 list

The 1080 is softer and about an ounce lighter, with a full width range. Runners who find the Bondi too much shoe usually land here or on the Clifton.

Against your Hoka Bondi 7: 1.7 oz lighter, 7 mm more heel stack, 2 mm more drop, $20 more at list.

Hoka Clifton 11, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.2 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 42 mm heel
  • $155 list

The Clifton is the same rockered Hoka formula with less foam and over an ounce less weight. The usual switch when the Bondi feels like too much shoe for actual running.

Against your Hoka Bondi 7: 1.5 oz lighter, 9 mm more heel stack, 4 mm more drop, $5 more at list.

Questions runners ask

Is the Hoka Bondi 7 still available?
For now. Amazon still lists the Hoka Bondi 7, but the size run is thinning and prices swing with remaining stock. If your size is there, this is the late window, not the early one.
Is the Bondi 8 a downgrade from the Hoka Bondi 7?
Not a downgrade, but a different shoe. The Bondi 8 scores well with new buyers while changing the ride that Hoka Bondi 7 loyalists bought it for. Read the spec changes before assuming it will feel familiar.
Is the Hoka Bondi still made?
Yes. The current version is the Hoka Bondi 9, released in 2025, 2 versions on from the Hoka Bondi 7.
What is the closest current alternative to the Hoka Bondi 7?
The Asics Gel-Nimbus 28. The modern Nimbus runs the same tall, soft, rockered recipe with a plusher, warmer upper and a little less bulk. The most direct cross-shop in the max-cushion aisle.
