THE SHORT ANSWER

The Gel-Cumulus 23 replaced the 22 on April 1, 2021 at $120. It moved to a full-length FlyteFoam midsole, trimmed 0.2 oz to 9.9 oz, and kept the 10 mm drop and the same quoted 23/13 mm platform. It is the last Cumulus of the old, firm, GEL-and-FlyteFoam era.

  • Drop is unchanged at 10 mm
  • New midsole foam

Every spec side by side, with the reason behind each change: Gel-Cumulus 22 vs 23.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?

Refined, same shoe

The best version of the old Cumulus, and the last one. Full-length FlyteFoam made the ride smoother end to end, the upper got lighter and cooler, and the shoe came in 0.2 oz under the 22 while holding the $120 price and the 10 mm drop. What it did not do is change what the Cumulus was: a firm, sensible, long-lasting daily trainer that nobody described as exciting. That description stopped being true one version later.

Stick with the Gel-Cumulus 22 if

  • The 22 fits you and you would rather buy it cheaper, because the platform is unchanged
  • You prefer the 22 sectioned GEL feel underfoot to full-length foam

Old stock is gone; see alternatives below.

Move to the Gel-Cumulus 23 if

  • You want the smoothest version of the firm, old-style Cumulus
  • You run warm; the 23 upper is the better ventilated of the two

Where the Asics Gel-Cumulus is now

Four generations separate the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22 from the Gel-Cumulus 28 (2026), so the gap is wider than any single update suggests:

  • The Gel-Cumulus 28 is 0.4 oz lighter
  • 15 mm more heel stack
  • Drop moved from 10 mm to 8 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $25

What loyalists said about the update

Well liked without being talked about much. Reviewers called it a dependable daily trainer and praised the ventilation and the smoother ride, while repeating the standing criticism that the Cumulus was firm and unremarkable next to softer rivals at the price. Its reputation improved in hindsight: once the 24 changed the foam and the drop, runners who wanted the old firm ride started naming the 23 as the last one that had it.

Questions runners ask

Is the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22 still available?
Partially. Women's sizes still turn up on Amazon, but men's stock is gone. If your size shows up, decide quickly; discontinued stock only shrinks.
Is the Gel-Cumulus 23 a downgrade from the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22?
No. Most runners rate the Gel-Cumulus 23 as the same shoe done slightly better. The changes are real but none of them alter what the shoe is.
How much lighter is the Gel-Cumulus 23?
0.2 oz lighter in a men's US 9: 9.9 oz against the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22's 10.1 oz.
Is the Asics Gel-Cumulus still made?
Yes. The current version is the Asics Gel-Cumulus 28, released in 2026, 6 versions on from the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22.
What is the closest current alternative to the Asics Gel-Cumulus 22?
The Brooks Ghost 18. The head-to-head rival, and the closest match on this list. Both are neutral daily trainers built for comfort rather than speed. The Ghost 18 is half an ounce heavier on a 10 mm drop against the Cumulus 28 8 mm, and lists $5 more.
