THE SHORT ANSWER

The Pegasus 40 replaced the Pegasus 39 in April 2023. It is a light retune rather than a redesign: same midsole, same dual Zoom Air units, with a softer upper that eased the 39's tight midfoot.

At a glance

  • The Pegasus 40 is 0.3 oz heavier
  • Drop is unchanged at 10 mm

Every spec side by side, with the reason behind each change: Pegasus 39 vs 40.

Stay on your shoe, or switch?

Faithful successor

The 40 rides so close to the 39 that most runners could not tell them apart blindfolded. Buy whichever one is cheaper in your size. That is not a knock. The 39 was good, and the 40 kept it.

Stick with the Pegasus 39 if

  • The 39 fits you and sells cheaper; the two ride the same
  • You prefer the slimmer, racier upper

Move to the Pegasus 40 if

  • The 39's midfoot wrap felt tight on your arch
  • Your size in the 39 is already gone

Where the Nike Pegasus is now

The line has moved three versions past the Nike Pegasus 39, and the current model is now the Pegasus 42 (2026). Measured against your shoe:

  • The Pegasus 42 is 0.8 oz heavier
  • 4 mm more heel stack
  • Drop is unchanged at 10 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $15

What loyalists said about the update

Reaction was a shrug, in the good sense. Forum threads settled on a consistent line: the 40 is the 39 with a comfier upper and 0.3 oz of extra weight. Wide-footed runners appreciated the relaxed midfoot.

Beyond the Pegasus 40, these come closest to what the Pegasus 39 did.

Brooks Ghost 18, men's shoe, side profile
  • 10.2 oz
  • 10 mm drop
  • 36 mm heel
  • $150 list

The Ghost is where Pegasus runners land most often. Similar weight, a little softer underfoot, and since the Ghost 17 the drop matches at 10 mm. It has no Zoom Air snap, but it fills the same do-everything role and Brooks changes it slowly.

Against your Nike Pegasus 39: 0.9 oz heavier, 3 mm more heel stack, the same drop, $20 more at list.

Saucony Ride 19, men's shoe, side profile
  • 8.9 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 38 mm heel
  • $145 list

The Ride matches the Pegasus in role and price, now with a softer supercritical foam. The main adjustment is the 8 mm drop, which heel strikers will notice for a week or two.

Against your Nike Pegasus 39: 0.4 oz lighter, 5 mm more heel stack, 2 mm less drop, $15 more at list.

Hoka Clifton 11, men's shoe, side profile
  • 9.2 oz
  • 8 mm drop
  • 42 mm heel
  • $155 list

Runners leaving the Pegasus for something softer usually end up here. The Clifton is more cushioned with a much taller, rockered platform that changes how the shoe moves through a stride. Try it on first.

Against your Nike Pegasus 39: the same weight, 9 mm more heel stack, 2 mm less drop, $25 more at list.

Is the Pegasus 40 a downgrade from the Nike Pegasus 39?
No. The Pegasus 40 keeps the same ride and fixes small things. If you liked the Nike Pegasus 39, the update carries over without an adjustment period.
How much heavier is the Pegasus 40?
0.3 oz heavier in a men's US 9: 9.6 oz against the Nike Pegasus 39's 9.3 oz.
Is the Nike Pegasus still made?
Yes. The current version is the Nike Pegasus 42, released in 2026, 3 versions on from the Nike Pegasus 39.
What is the closest current alternative to the Nike Pegasus 39?
The Brooks Ghost 18. The Ghost is where Pegasus runners land most often. Similar weight, a little softer underfoot, and since the Ghost 17 the drop matches at 10 mm. It has no Zoom Air snap, but it fills the same do-everything role and Brooks changes it slowly.
