THE SHORT ANSWER

The Ghost 17 replaced the Ghost 16 in May 2025 and made the first geometry change in the line: the drop fell from 12 mm to 10 mm, built by adding 3 mm of foam under the forefoot. It also gained 0.4 oz and $10.

Changed character

The 17 is still a daily trainer for everybody, but it is the most changed Ghost in a decade. Two millimeters of drop sounds small and is not, and the taller, softer forefoot moves the ride away from the low-slung feel the line was built on. If a 12 mm drop is why your Achilles tolerates running, buy 16s while they exist.

Stick with the Ghost 16 if

  • A 12 mm drop is protecting your Achilles or calves
  • You liked the lower, firmer forefoot feel
  • Clearance 16s in your size sit far below list

Move to the Ghost 17 if

  • You heel strike and want a softer, quieter landing
  • You want more forefoot cushion for long easy runs
  • The 16's upper ran warm on you

Where the Brooks Ghost is now

Two updates on, the Ghost 18 (2026) is what sits on shelves today. Against the shoe you own rather than the one that directly replaced it:

  • The Ghost 18 is 0.4 oz heavier
  • Drop moved from 12 mm to 10 mm
  • New midsole foam
  • List price up $10

The 16 to 17 handoff is a drop question and almost nothing else. Brooks kept the foam, kept the fit, and moved the drop from 12 mm to 10 mm by stacking 3 mm of foam under the forefoot. For most runners that is a non-event and the 17 is the better shoe. For the group that ended up in a Ghost because a 12 mm heel was the one thing their Achilles tolerated, it is the whole shoe. That group is why the 16 became a stock-up target instead of a clearance item: it is the last Ghost built on the geometry this line ran for a decade.

What loyalists said about the update

Reviewers were positive and called it the boldest Ghost update in years. The community split cleanly on the drop: heel strikers with knee complaints welcomed the extra forefoot foam, Achilles-sensitive runners mourned the 12 mm geometry, and a few long-timers grumbled about the tapered toebox.

Questions runners ask

Is the Brooks Ghost 16 still available?
For now. Amazon still lists the Brooks Ghost 16, but the size run is thinning and prices swing with remaining stock. If your size is there, this is the late window, not the early one.
Is the Ghost 17 a downgrade from the Brooks Ghost 16?
Not a downgrade, but a different shoe. The Ghost 17 scores well with new buyers while changing the ride that Brooks Ghost 16 loyalists bought it for. Read the spec changes before assuming it will feel familiar.
How much heavier is the Ghost 17?
0.4 oz heavier in a men's US 9: 10.2 oz against the Brooks Ghost 16's 9.8 oz.
Did the drop change from the Brooks Ghost 16 to the Ghost 17?
Yes, from 12 mm to 10 mm. A drop change this size affects where your foot loads at landing, so plan a few easy runs to adapt.
Is the Brooks Ghost still made?
Yes. The current version is the Brooks Ghost 18, released in 2026, 2 versions on from the Brooks Ghost 16.
What is the closest current alternative to the Brooks Ghost 16?
The Nike Pegasus 42. The Pegasus covers the same daily-trainer role with a firmer ride, and since the Ghost 17 the two lines share a 10 mm drop. It is the obvious cross-shop in the other direction.
